Johnnie Dodds Boulevard

  • The Johnnie Dodds Boulevard Project will improve approximately three miles of US 17 from just north of the Arthur J. Ravenel, Jr. Bridge to the south side of the I-526 interchange, including associated frontage roads and side streets.

  • Johnnie Dodds Boulevard will be widened from two to three lanes in both north and south directions.

  • Curbs and gutters will be constructed along the entire length of the project.

  • Frontage roads will be widened to provide one lane in each direction with four-foot-wide, marked bicycle lanes and sidewalks.

  • Traffic light upgrades and pedestrian crosswalks will be constructed at the following intersections along Johnnie Dodds Boulevard: Magrath Darby Boulevard; Mathis Ferry Road); Houston-Northcutt Boulevard; Shelmore Boulevard; and Anna Knapp Boulevard, with auxiliary turn lanes where needed.

  • There will be a place for pedestrians to pause at both the Shelmore Boulevard and Anna Knapp Boulevard intersections while crossing Johnnie Dodds Boulevard.

  • Left turn lanes from Johnnie Dodds Boulevard to Shelmore Boulevard and Anna Knapp Boulevard will be limited to a single lane with the ability to add an additional future turn lane if needed.

  • Landscaped median areas throughout the project will vary in width, but resemble medians along Hungryneck Boulevard. Street lighting and landscaping will be provided along the median and between the mainline and the frontage road system.

  • A diamond-shaped interchange with a new bridge will be constructed to allow Johnnie Dodds Boulevard traffic to cross over Bowman Road. The interchange will have three southbound lanes and two northbound lanes.

  • Bowman Road will be widened to six lanes from Johnnie Dodds Boulevard to Shem Creek, which will connect with the Town of Mount Pleasantís Bowman Road Widening Project when completed.

  • New traffic lights will be placed where the ramp connects at Bowman Road, where East Frontage Road intersects with Houston-Northcutt Boulevard and Bowman Road, and where West Frontage Road intersects with Mathis Ferry Road,, Anna Knapp Boulevard and Bowman Road. These timing of these traffic lights will coordinated with traffic lights along Johnnie Dodds Boulevard. An exception to this will be intersections restricted to right-in and right-out turns on the east side of the Bowman Road interchange. These intersections will remain in their current locations with the exception of the west quadrant of the Bowman Road interchange, which will be relocated approximately 200 feet further from Johnnie Dodds Boulevard in conjunction with the Hospital Road relocation project.

  • The project also includes the design and construction of a bridge on Bowman Road over Shem Creek, including all required roadway and drainage improvements. The bridge will be approximately 90 feet long and 80 feet wide, and will include sidewalks on both sides.
